Alhambra, Los Angeles County
Alhambra was named by its founder, Benjamin Wilson, after the Washington Irving book Tales of the Alhambra, which his daughter was reading when he subdivided the land in the 1870s. The city incorporated in 1903 and calls itself the Gateway to the San Gabriel Valley. Main Street remains the center of town, with theaters, restaurants and the main civic buildings.
